Main Battles Of The French Revolution
The Day of Tiles in 1788: said to be the first major battle of
the revolution.The parliament refuted a law that the King attempted to pass
allowing him to take an enomrmous loan from the country. Citizens joined the
parliament and went against the Kings orders.
-The Storming of the Bastille on July
14th, 1789: a crowd of
regular peseants knew that weapons were stored in the Bastille prison so they
decided to attack it. Hundreds of people were killed by Marquis de Launays
orders but when the rescue team arrived they decided to unite with the people of
France. Marquis ended up surrending and allowing the people to enter the
Bastille. He was beheaded and the Bastille was
destroyed.
-Eviction of the royal family from Versailles on
October 5th, 1789: a mob
of women who were furious with the prices of bread formed. Thousands of women
marched to the royal palace and demanded that Lousi XVI get rid of the
taxes.
-France vs. Austria in April 1792: Austrian and
Prussian forces under Charles William Ferdinand, thought of the French as
unorganized so they immediately began to march on to Paris. Ferdinand issued a manifesto that threatened anyone
who tried harming the royal family. The manifesto angered the French and the war between them began.
-Vendeen Insurrection from March to September 1793: a real civil war that took place in
the French countryside that was between the Vendeen and the republican guards.
More then a 100,000 people died. The Vendeen Insurrection led to the Reign of
Terror.
-The Reign of Terror: right before King Louis XVI was killed and a new leader came
in, Maximilien Robesperre. This was a cruel period when France was killing its
people by hundreds in a frightening movement of rage. People were
arrested and executed without trial if they were accused of being enemies of the
revolution. About 40,000 people died during this 15 month
period. Anyone who seemed to be an antirevolutionist was
executed.
